The history of the city is simultaneously a history of migration, inequality and co-existence of diverse populations. Starting from classical texts of the German, Chicago and Machester Schools the seminar introduces into the main debates in urban sociology. Attention will we paid to general sociological aspects of urbanity on the one hand and the relevance of ethnic diversity and social inequality for urban conviviality on the other hand. In this framework, the question of ”Ghettoisation” and ”Gentrification” and their implication for urban life will be of special interest. The Seminar will be held in English.

- Regular and active participation
- Regular reading of seminar texts
- An oral presentation about one of the session topics
- Essay 10-15 pages (handed it at the end of semester).
